amateur radio equipment and its capability. The ham station is
well situated with good
propagation and an adequate
size operating room.
The communications
equipment includes state of
the art Winlink capabilities
which can connect to the
Personal Mail Box Office
(PMBO) located at Simon
Fraser University on Burnaby mountain. The station is
operated each Wednesday checking into the PEP net 3.735MHz and

PSK Workshop November 2, 2005
A PSK Workshop held at Surrey No. 9 Firehall Training Centre was attended by 35 participants comprised of 9 SARC members and 26 visitors from other clubs including a several from the US. John VE7JBB opened the meeting at 1930 by introducing speaker Clint Hurd KK7UQ and reviewing his lifelong career in digital design and engineering.
Clint began his presentation with a slide showing the basic equipment needed: an ordinary transceiver, a PC, a simple interface and software which is available free. Clint reviewed the circuitry of PC/radio interfaces and IMD measuring instruments, reviewed the capabilities of software packages such as Digipan and MixW, characteristics of good and poor signals in terms of inter-modulation distortion (IMD), requirements for achieving proper signal levels, the principles and relative advantages of various digital modes including BPSK31, BPSK63, QPSK31, RTTY, Helleschreiber and Olivia. He also dealt with common problems in receiving and transmitting digital signals, and provided some pointers on the effective use of macros. A commentary on the meaning and measurement of “RST” signal reports for digital signals provoked some interesting discussion. The presentation concluded at approximately 2130 following a question and answer period.
Those who wish more information including a copy of Clint’s Powerpoint material and/or ordering information for instrumentation available from Clint should visit his website at http://kk7uq.hfradio.org/ .
SARC President, Anton VE7SSD thanked Clint for his enlightening presentation and on behalf of SARC and guests presented Clint with a token of appreciation consisting of BC wines.
Anton went on to draw tickets for door prizes and concluded with a ticket draw of $43.00 for the 50/50 raffle. Guest Tom Robson VE7DID, was the lucky winner. Tom generously donated his winnings to SARC. Thank you Tom!
Thanks also to Bob VE7FWZ and Eileen VE7IRK for handling the registrations and 50/50 draw, Anton for the refreshments and windup duties, and Fred for his assistance with A/V equipment an provision of the talk-in radio. The evening was declared a success with participants indicating that they would like further workshops and presentations of this nature.
