Valerie Simmons, MSc, RN, RM
Valerie believes strongly in the normality of pregnancy and birth. She was born and raised in Ireland, and became a registered nurse in 1992 after completing her training in Dublin. She then moved to Cardiff, Wales (UK) and became a registered midwife in 1995. After working in Cardiff for 2 ½ years she went to Uganda for a year teaching and practicing midwifery in a government training school and hospital. At the beginning of 1999 she returned to the UK and completed a Masters degree in Health Service Studies. She began teaching midwifery at Hull University in northern England in 2001. She has worked in a wide range of settings including a low risk birth center and high-risk obstetric units.
Valerie worked with the Cowichan Midwifery Group throughout 2005 and then moved to Victoria in 2006. She also teaches part time for the UBC midwifery programme. Valerie and her husband have a young daughter and a son, both born at home in 2008 and 2012. They are happy to have made Victoria their home.
Emma Jo Knapp BNat, RN, RM
Emma Jo Knapp trained as a Naturopath, Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife before immigrating to Canada in 2011 to pursue the dream of working within a model of midwifery care that is universally admired. She enjoys a special interest in out of hospital birth and home birth.
Since moving to Canada, Emma has worked previously as an RN at Victoria General Hospital in Labour and Delivery Unit. Since the birth of her son in Victoria in 2013, Emma has completed an International Midwifery Bridging Program in Toronto and has since been working as a midwife in Manitoba. Emma is delighted to now come back to the beautiful city of Victoria, a city she and her husband Gavin are happy to call their home. She is mother to two beautiful children, Rosie born in by c-section in Australia (2005) and little Charlie, born at home in Victoria (2013). She is thrilled to be working with the women and families of Victoria again.
