Health Problems:
Hip Dysplasia - Hip dysplasia is a major concern with
German Shepherds these days. Currently German Shepherds are #40
overall on the OFA website (OFA).
This is far from the worst but there is still much work to be done.
Breeding responsibly is the only solution.
Elbow Dysplasia - As with hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia
is also an issue our breed deals with. The German Shepherd is
currently #8 overall on the OFA website.
Epilepsy -

Living Conditions:
German Shepherds require ample exercise and do best in at
least a small yard. They can live happily in an apartment as long as
the are exercised on a regular basis.
Grooming:
Germans Shepherds are lovingly known as German Shedders.
They shed all year long. They will shed heavily in the Spring to shed
out any winter coat, but do expect hair to shed constantly throughout the
year. A daily
brush will help eliminate loose hairs.
Bathing should be kept to a minimum if possible to reduce
oil depletion from the skin.
