Activities

Comox certainly lives up to its name which means ‘place of abundance’. The Comox Valley, encompassing mountains to ocean, is a year round playground for all ages! With its mild, temperate climate, amazing scenery and fantastic opportunities for every type of activity, it’s an idyllic vacation area.

Choose from walking, kayaking, golfing, fishing, sailing, diving, cycling (and mountain biking for those seeking a challenge), swimming and tennis. Or just sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery which beckons everywhere you look. Snow capped mountains and the Comox Glacier can be enjoyed while sipping on coffee; waterfront vistas are minutes away.

Get close to nature with a whale watching or grizzly bear expedition. Perhaps salmon fishing is more your scene? All of these opportunities are easily arranged.

Walk or cycle the wonderful parks available in the area – there are more than 40 to choose from, each offering something a little different. The Comox Valley Recreation Map provides plenty of trail and recreation information – pick up a copy at the Visitor Centre and at selected local retailers in Courtenay and Comox.

It’s easy to get on the water – rent a kayak and get straight on the water via the Puntledge River. There’s no better way to enjoy the seals, herons and eagles which abound in this area. A sunset paddle - it’s the perfect way to end a day.

Golf your game? Enjoy the seven courses available (six of which are open year-round). There are more world-class island courses less than an hour away – play a different course every day of your vacation!

There’s no shortage of festivals and events, from the Winter Festival at Mount Washington to Highland Games and a Rodeo! Music fans are in for a treat. The Comox Valley Youth Music Centre (www.cymc.ca) offers a month-long program of jazz and classical concerts or take in the Vancouver Island MusicFest in July - a three day outdoor extravaganza. The Sid Williams theatre offers a wide selection of entertainment while the renowned Filberg Festival (www.filbergfestival.com) is an all round treat, showcasing the creative skills of more than 130 artisans, superb food and entertainers.

Youngsters can enjoy the beaches, Water Park, museums, petting farms, the largest skateboarding park in BC, the BMX race track and mini golf. Don’t miss the annual KidsFest, dedicated to the young.

There’s also no lack of shopping and dining opportunities, too numerous to mention here. Visit www.discovercomoxvalley.com  for a complete breakdown of all that the Valley has to offer. The only problem is deciding how to fit it all in to your vacation time! Enjoy.
