ABOUT US

D.V. Read and Learn is a small, not-for-profit organization that works "to promote, develop and enhance literacy skills".  We receive funding from Alberta Advanced Education and Technology to provide a confidential service to adults needing assistance with reading, writing, spelling, math, and computing. We also receive funding from the Family Literacy Initiative Fund to provide programs to overburdened families in our community.  We partner with other organizations to increase family literacy skills to all families through Circle Time Rhymes, National Family Literacy Day celebrations and in hosting the Alberta Prairie Classroom on Wheels (C.O.W.) Bus.

Literacy is vital to everyday living:

-write shopping lists
-compare prices
-read household bills
-read signs or menus
-find and hold a job
-fill out forms
-further education
-read books, magazines or newspapers for pleasure

About 1 in 5 adult Albertans do not have the literacy skills to cope in our society.  People with low levels of literacy are more likely to be:

-chronically unemployed
-among the working poor
-in danger of losing their jobs
-on social assistance

Low levels of literacy affect people's health and quality of life.  Higher levels of literacy enhance our ability to understand and manage our own health care, family, career, and everyday lives.

What do we do?

We match trained volunteer tutors one to one with students.
We believe that teamwork helps students reach their goals.
We will ensure your confidentiality.

Our Goals

-To promote and support literacy and lifelong learning.
-To promote reading and learning as activities both individuals and families can enjoy.
-To enhance the ability of parents to support their children's literacy development.
-To provide both adult students and parents with the tools necessary to ensure success.
-To show that reading can be FUN!
