PROGRAMS

"I wanted to encourage others to reach out for help.  Don't feel ashamed,
because you are not the only one who is not able to read or write.
It doesn't matter who you are or what language you speak, don't get discouraged."

I would like information on your family programs.

We are currently offering three programs for families with children aged 0 to 5 years.  Please call our office for further information or to register.

Baby Book Packs

The goal of the program is to promote the benefits of reading to children starting at a very young age.  In partnership with the Drayton Valley Community Health Centre, we have been distributing the Books for Babies packages since 1994.  The packages are handed out to families when they bring their babies in for their 4 and 12 month immunizations.  Each package includes an age-appropriate book and literature outlining the importance of reading to your baby.  Also included is an invitation to the programming that we provide.

Packages are also available for pickup at the D.V. Read and Learn Office.

Rhymes that Bind

Long before they understand speech, children take pleasure in the rhythm and pattern of sound, learning and widening their interests at the at same time.  Rhymes that Bind is an oral literacy program, for babies 0 to 4 years of age.  Parents learn to enjoy rhymes, finger plays, songs and lullabies with their infants and toddlers in a supportive environment.  The rhymes learned are useful for:

-waiting in line at the grocery store
-waiting at the doctor's office
-long drives in the car
-etc. etc.

With the new songs and rhymes you learn, you can turn these trying moments around.

Infant Circle Time Rhymes

This program is provided through partnership with Drayton Valley F.C.S.S.  Moms and babies are welcomed into the Shangri-La Lodge each week for singing, sharing, and visiting.  The seniors enjoy visiting with the families and the multi-generational interaction is wonderful.

Berrymoor Rhyme Time 10-12 noon Moms and Tots

This Rhymes That Bind program is being offered in the rural area, currently being held at the Berrymoor Centre.  It will run from September to May on Mondays at 10:30.  Please call the office to register.

-------------------------------------

Bedtime Rhymes

This program is held at the Evergreen Parent Link Centre every second Wednesday during Stay and Play 5:00-7: 30 pm.

 -------------------------------------

Children's Book Drive

Drop off gently used children's books at our office or at the local schools and we recycle them in the community.  Share with others!

B.O.O.K.S. - Books Offer Our Kids Success

Join us for a six-week journey as we explore how to make reading fun and interactive for you and your child.  We will review a number of popular children's books, learn to pick out themes and make crafts around those themes.  This is a fun way to help your child develop the language and early literacy skills necessary for success in reading and writing.

NOTE: This is a parent-centered class with on-site child care provided, if needed.
