VOLUNTEERING WITH US

"I can't imagine not being able to read.  People miss so many opportunities and face so many difficulties in life if they can not read or write.  I want to help someone to read."

A Tutor

About 1 in 5 adult Albertans do not have the literacy skills to cope in our society.  People who have trouble reading have developed many different coping skills to help them get by in daily life.  These people deserve more than just coping skills... they deserve a chance to be confident, contributing members of society.

How I can help?

You can help by training to be an adult volunteer tutor.  This requires a minimum of six hours in-house training.  We believe that teamwork helps students reach their goals.  In addition, we welcome volunteers who can contribute in other ways:

-Office help
-Fundraising
-Serving on boards or committees
-Helping out with special events
-Raising awareness of literacy issues
-Assist in facilitation at family programs

Who would I be helping?

You would be helping individuals who need help with basic literacy, those who want to improve their reading, spelling, writing, math skills, and/or computing, and people learning English.

What are the requirements?

Generally, a grade 12 and/or equivalent education.  Volunteers need to be 18 years of age or older.  They are also required to have a valid (less than three months old) criminal reference check (which can be obtained at any RCMP detachment).

Where can I get further information?

You may reach us at (780) 621 - 1722, Monday - Thursday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, or e-mail anytime by clicking here.
