Tattoo Meme

Well, this has to be the easiest meme I've been tagged for yet... Thanks Marisa! My mission, should I choose to accept it (and I have) is to take a photo of one of my tattoos and post it on my blog. So here's my lotus flower kanji tattoo on my lower right abdomen (only visible when I wear my lowrise jeans):

To me it symbolizes the power to thrive in times of adversity, just as the lotus flower thrives in the mud. I have three tattoos so far, I don't regret a single one and I plan on getting more in the future.

As for who to tag, I don't remember who has tattoos and who doesn't, and I have to admit that I'm too tired to try to remember or find out. So if I tag you and you don't have any tattoos, no worries. But if you do have tattoos, then I showed you mine so you can show me yours.

Movie Meme Madness

I discovered this thanks to NickQueen.com:

Pick out ten favorite movies, then look them up at IMDb. In the overview at the top of each movie's page, there are "Plot Keywords," usually five of them. (Plus more, if you click the link.) Take the first five, and post them. Then the rest of us get to play movie buff and see if we can guess them.

1. Catcher In The Rye / No Opening Credits / Alternative History / Parallel Time / Parallel World

2. Bureaucrat / Parcel / London / Daydream / Fight The System

3. Directed By Star / Blind Man / Snowman / Heart Ripped Out / Decapitation

4. Sister Sister Relationship / Sister / 19th Century / England / Estate

5. Parenthood / Mission / Profanity / Tense / Crushed Head

6. Pennsylvania / Reporter / Stock Trading / News Anchor / Guitar

7. Vomit Scene / Poker Player / Poker / Black Comedy / Robbery

8. Male Female Relationship / Love / Actor / Male Nudity / Theater Life

9. Sequel / Native American / Hippie / Sexual Promiscuity / Xenophobia

10. Cello / Childbirth / Death / Ghost / Love

Feel free to post your guesses in my comments or on your own blog with a link in my comments.

My guesses for Nick's movies (without trying to search for them on IMDb):
1. Casablanca
2. Grosse Pointe Blank
3. ?
4. Superman
5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
6. ?
7. Signs
8. It's a Wonderful Life
9. ?
10. ?

The Thinker

I've been tagged with the Thinking Blogger Award! Leigh, who tagged me, says that I'm both right and left brained. Which this quiz I took agrees with (I'd still like to know what happened to the other 2% of my brain… or maybe ignorance is bliss sometimes).

This award, however, has some very fun rules attached to it. They are:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs which make you think.
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme.
3. Optional: Proudly display the Thinking Blogger Award.

The choices are tough. Not because I can't think of several right off the top of my head, but I don't want to tag those poor people that I know get tagged all the time and may well feel obligated to do it even if they're all memed out. And then not everyone likes to participate in memes, but I'm taking a chance on a few here and I'll say up front that I won't be offended if they choose to opt out.

I'll start with Lattégirl (aka Terry). Her blog is eclectic, like mine, and peppered with musings, both big and small. Her love of language is obvious and I think it's very cool that she just translated a poem from French to English for one of her clients.

Next is Joana and her great book reviews. Reviewing books well without giving away too much is quite a balancing act, but Joana manages it very nicely thank you very much. Plus her blog has a choice of themes, depending on what you the reader prefer, which I think is too cool.

Now I'm not sure if Zorn does memes or not, but I would definitely say that "Don't Fear the Truth" is the blog of a thinking blogger, or technically thinking bloggers plural. So I would extend this award to all of that blog's authors.

Now we need a philosophical thinker to add to the bunch and I think Levanah is just the woman for the job.

Last but not least is a new blog by Karen that chronicles her thoughts about books, movies and life. It's called Winding Threads, isn't that a great title?

Moody Monday

I was in the mood for a meme today and discovered Moody Monday (how apropos). It's a weekly photo meme based on a certain mood of the week. This week's mood is "light" and the photo I chose is from a dance piece called "Wind Swept" that was produced by my mother. I love the interplay of light and shadow in this photo, but I'm also amusing myself with the play on words: light >> light as air >> wind >> wind swept:

What's Your Obsession?

Terry aka Lattégirl tagged me for a meme. I am required to list five things I can call an obsession and then tag five people to do the same. (I may skip the tagging this time around, because I had limited response with my last round of tagging... and two of the people that I tagged last time have already done this one!)

You have to wonder if there's something wrong with you when someone asks you to list five things you can admit to being obsessed with and your first reaction is, "only five?" But here are the five I settled on:

1. Battlestar Galactica (Just check out my growing list of BSG posts!)

2. Filmmaking (In the past year, I've shot three short films, completed post-production on one of them, and started the script for a feature. I'm taking a long format Screenwriting course this year with the intention of finishing the screenplay for the feature. Check out my Film Blog for sporadic updates on this obsession of mine. Did ya like the subtle plug for my other blog?)

3. Blistex (Must.Have.Soft.Lips.)

4. Counting (I don't know if this is some mild OCD thing or just a math geek thing, but I count everything, all the time, sometimes just to kill time. Sometimes I don't even realize that I'm counting until someone asks me what I'm counting.)

5. Jake Gyllenhaal (Yep, my name is Weirdgrrl and I'm a Gyllenhaalic... not just Jake either; I want Maggie, his sister, to star in the feature that I'm writing. Just gotta get the script finished before she stops making the low-low budget stuff.)

You know what, I'm gonna try an "open tag"... meaning that anyone who reads this post should feel free to list their five obsessions in the comments or post them on their blog and put a link in the comments. Let's see if anyone actually does this. Hmmm...

Just Sit Right Back and You'll Hear a Tale...

I've just been tagged by the Desert Island meme.

Skeet chose me as one of five blogger companions to be stranded on a desert island with. Unfortunately, I assume I can't choose Skeet to be one of mine… pity, there's a gal who knows how to get rid of bugs. And I'm thinking that deserted islands probably have bugs. Me no like bugs. Though Skeet did say that she would try to get the island wired and cabled so me so I could keep up with Battlestar Galactica. Now there's an idea that works for me. So who will I select to keep me company on my deserted island with satellite hook up?

1. Kat — I don't know if Kat does the meme thing, but I think every community needs to have someone who can keep things real. And nobody keeps things real as well as Kat does. Then there's the added sarcasm bonus. Life without a hefty dash of sarcasm is just plain dull. I don't much like dull.

2. Brett — Do you know why they don't send donkeys to college? Because nobody likes a smarta$$. Unless they're actually funny… which Brett happens to be. And if I'm gonna be stranded on a desert island, I'd better have someone who can make me laugh so hard that I spurt coconut milk through my nose. I don't know if Brett's a memer either (is that even a word?), but I'm taggin' him anyway.

3. Patrick — If we're gonna be on a deserted island, I assume there will be a lot of cooking by campfire. And I definitely want ghost stories around that campfire, so Patrick's the man for that.

4. Robyn — And speaking of cooking, I think it would be smart to invite along someone with a blog full of yummy recipes. (You should see her oh-so-easy mud pie recipe… my mouth is watering just thinking about it.)

5. Terry — I figure anyone who celebrates Alfred Hitchcock Day must be the kind of grrl I can have a good ole pop culture conversation with. And if we're stranded there for a year, that'll be a must. Pop culture stuff is oxygen to me.

As Skeet did before me, I'm promising solar-powered laptops with coconut-wireless connections to my fellow castaways. I mean, we ARE bloggers after all. I might be able to live without my Tim Horton's coffee (oooh… bad example… okay, Timmie's will be air dropping coffee onto the island, too)… let me try this again: I might be able to live without my car, but not my computer.

Cyborg Name Generator

I just found this site that's kind of fun; it generates a cyborg based on your name. I entered my real name at first but I ended up as a "Cybernetic Artificial Repair Android" which didn't thrill me. So I used my internet name instead. I like this one much better:

The limited number of songs that I bolded led me to muse upon what I was listening to back then. I guess I was already into more alternative stuff. Some of my favourite artists at that time (in no particular order) were Jane Siberry, Sting, Suzanne Vega, David Bowie and Depeche Mode. But the number of songs I italicized suggests that I at least listened to the radio more than I do now.

Temba, His Arms Wide

I originally misread this week's Sunday Seven question as favourite TV episodes, each from a different series. As you will see, that's not really what Patrick intended. But I decided to keep what I wrote anyway because I wrote so damn much!

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name your top seven favorite individual episodes of any single television series. If you feel especially enterprising, give a few lines explaining why you think makes your chosen episodes so good.

1. The West Wing, "A Proportional Response"

One of my favourite shows on TV until Aaron Sorkin left, there are countless episodes that I would call favourites. Here I opted for the one where Charlie was first hired. I love how he keeps insisting that he's just there for the messenger job but keeps getting pulled deeper into the West Wing. And the dialogue at the end provided a wonderful example of what I call a "West Wing moment." After Charlie has figured out where the President left his glasses, and gets yelled at for his pains, he decides that he should just leave. Then President Bartlet pulls him aside...
BARTLET: Listen, Leo McGarry filled me in on the situation with your mother. I'm so very sorry. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of calling Tom Connolly, the FBI Director, and we had the computer spit out some quick information. Your mother was killed by a Westing 38 revolver firing KTWs, or what are known as "cop killer" bullets. Now, we have not had a whole lot of success yet in banning that weapon and those bullets off the streets, but we're planning on taking a big whack at it when Congress comes back from recess.
(beat)
So, What do you say, you wanna come help us out?

CHARLIE: (pause) Yes sir, I do.

After a bit more banter between other characters, Charlie whispers to Josh...

CHARLIE: I've never felt like this before.

Josh smiles...

JOSH: It doesn't go away.

2. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Once More With Feeling"

So many Buffy episodes to choose from, I was tempted to follow Carly's example and list all my favourite Buffy episodes, but I didn't want to be a copycat. Given my intense love of musicals and all things Buffy, this particular episode seemed like a natural choice.

3. Battlestar Galactica, "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 2"

I've made no secret of the fact that BSG is one of my favourite TV shows, so again, tough to choose. But Chief Tyrol's speech, and its echoes of Mario Savio, made me opt for this one hands down.
TYROL: There comes a time when you realize that the engine you built with your blood and your sweat and your tears is being used for something so foul, so perverted, it makes you sick in your heart. And it's then that you must throw your body on the gears, and on the levers, and on the machine itself and make it stop! And you have to show the people who run it, the people who control it, that unless we're free that machine will be prevented from working at all!

4. Star Trek: The Next Generation, "Darmok"

The first TV episode I ever purchased, back when you had to buy them on VHS one episode at a time. Such a brilliant, thought-provoking episode. I attempted to address it in a previous post (The Language of Metaphor), but was overwhelmed by how much I wanted to say about it. So maybe that's a post for the future. (In case you're wondering, the title of this post is from Darmok and means "giving; receiving.")

5. Star Trek: Voyager, "Drone"

Expanding greatly on concepts first presented in the Star Trek: TNG episode, "I, Borg" I found this episode truly moving, especially at the end when Seven says, "You're hurting me," a line that One had used previously in a literal context. Ironically, this oh-so-touching episode also contains one of my favourite bits of funny dialogue from Voyager:
ONE: I was an accident?

DOCTOR: Call it a random convergence of technologies.

ONE: Am I unwelcome here?

DOCTOR: On the contrary. Our primary mission is to explore new forms of life. You may have been unexpected but given time, I am sure you'll make a fine addition to the crew. After all, you've got my mobile emitter driving your neo-cortex so you're bound to make a dazzling impression.
(beat)
That's called a joke.

ONE: Joke. A verbal comment or gesture designed to provoke laughter.

DOCTOR: I see you've got your mother's sense of humour.

6. Rock Star: Supernova, "Week 10"

This may sound like a strange choice, but this was the week when Storm Large sang her original song, "Ladylike." Her performance still rocks my world.

Do you want Storm to come to Calgary? Demand it!

7. Sex and the City, "An American Girl in Paris: Part Deux"

I wish I'd thought of this one for the Sunday Seven about our favourite series finales. Anyway, I loved how all the storylines wrapped up in such touching ways, while remaining completely true to the characters.

Best line...
CARRIE: I am someone who is looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can't-live-without-each-other love.

Sounds good to me.

The Sunday non-Seven

I finally got around to playing Patrick's Sunday Seven this week and decided that I couldn't really play the way I'm supposed to.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name your seven favorite television series finales.

I don't have seven. I have two. Unless I'm forgetting some (which could easily be the case). So I'm splitting up my list...

Favorite TV series finales:

1. Star Trek: The Next Generation ("All Good Things...")
2. Star Trek: Voyager ("Endgame")

Okay TV series finales:

3. Frasier ("Goodnight, Seattle")
4. Friends ("The Last One")

Disappointing TV series finales:

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ("Chosen")... they killed Anya!!!!
6. M*A*S*H ("Goodbye, Farewell & Amen")... I was so stoked for this finale and so crushingly disappointed afterwards; for me, it almost seemed to negate everything that went before.
7. Seinfeld ("The Finale")... ditto

And an extra couple of categories just for the heck of it...

TV series finales that would have been good had they bothered to mention that it was series finale, not simply a season finale:

8. Judging Amy ("My Name is Amy Gray...")

TV series finales that I didn't watch because Aaron Sorkin didn't write it:

9. The West Wing ("Tomorrow")

A New Year's Sunday Seven

I guess this week's Sunday Seven is kind of a reverse New Year's resolution post. But I actually did really well with my resolutions for 2006, so this could be surprisingly challenging.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name up to seven things you had planned or hoped to do, but didn't, by the time 2006 came to a close.

1. Finish feature-length screenplay
2. Finish decorating apartment
3. Take swing dance lessons
4. Get up to date on my taxes (my bad )
5. Visit friends in New York
6. Visit friends in Oregon
7. Get a new piercing (I was thinkin' nose... but I never really decided for sure)

Hmm, I think this just became my resolution list for 2007.

Yabba Dabba Doo!

This week's Sunday Seven at Patrick's Weekender...

This past week, we lost one of the greats in the world of animated cartoons, Joseph Barbera. The list of the characters created by Barbera and his partner William Hanna is lengthy. You can see it for yourself here. That little bit of reading should prepare you for this week's question.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name your top seven favorite Hanna-Barbera cartoons.

1. Charlotte's Web
2. The Flintstones
3. Scooby Doo
4. Super Friends
5. The Jetsons
6. Josie and the Pussycats
7. Captain Caveman

I have to confess that until I checked the Wikipedia, I had no idea that Charlotte's Web was a Hanna-Barbera production. But it became an easy choice for first place once I discovered that. (Though I doubt I'll be checking out the new live action version.)

Super Size Meme

Having never completed last week's Word Beads, I figured I'd combine last week and this week.

Last week's words:

Rework
Cost
Abed
Phosgene
Kiloword

This week's words:

Fray
Cradle
Resent
Style
Militarily

I lay abed, wide awake, thinking about the documentary that I'd seen about World War I and the use of phosgene gas as chemical warfare. Soldier's marching militarily into the fray, down to their deaths as they choked on this deadly pale yellow cloud. The military may resent this style of documentary but, as they say, a picture is worth a kiloword. I have long believed (probably since the cradle, given my hippie parents and the fact that I was born in the States during the Vietnam War), that the cost of war—any war—is too high (though I tend to need to rework this theory when it comes to discussing our involvement in World War II). This film changed nothing except to root my beliefs even more firmly and to wish even more fervently that those in power today would see things as I do.

Kiloword?

I went to tackle this week's Word Beads and it's a toughie:

Rework
Cost
Abed
Phosgene
Kiloword

Um... What the heck is a Kiloword? There's a link for each word to Dictionary.com from the Word Beads website, but for "Kiloword" the dictionary site just says "No results found." So anybody know what "kiloword" means? The only thing I can think of is "1000 words"... any other ideas?

The Seven Seas

This week's Sunday Seven seemed particularly challenging for me, since I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian (meaning, among other things, that I don't eat seafood):

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name up to seven of your favorite items to eat in a seafood restaurant.

To answer this question to the best of my ability, I decided to check out the menu at Red Lobster and see what I would actually be able to eat...

1. Mozzarella Cheesesticks
2. Stuffed Mushrooms
3. Seafood Caesar Salad without the seafood
4. Shrimp Linguini Alfredo without the shrimp
5. Mashed Potatoes
6. Mac & Cheese (off the kids menu)
7. Key Lime Pie

Which illustrates quite clearly why I don't frequent seafood restaurants.

A Meme Moment

I decided I didn't want to go to bed feeling bummed out when I actually had a really good day. So I'm finally getting around to this week's Word Beads:
melodrama
accumulator
jingle
unadulterated
ale

"Jimmy was an accumulator of old-fashioned silent films that exuded unadulterated melodrama. Every Christmas Eve, he would invite his friends over for ale and entertainment. He would project the movies onto the side of his white garage for all to enjoy, but no organ music accompanied these films... only the sound of jingle bells."

7-Up

This week's Sunday Seven seemed particularly apropos for me, since my blog is actually named after a Jones Soda flavour:

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Come up with your own list of strange flavors that you think are worthy of Jones Soda's concoctions. (They don't have to necessarily be "holiday" foods, or even flavors you'd want to drink.)

1. Pumpkin Pie (can't believe Jones didn't already create this for the dessert pack)
2. Mashed Potato (another missed opportunity for the holiday pack)
3. Cucumber & Cream Cheese
4. Melon & Dill Pickle
5. Pineapple & Jalapeño
6. Lime & Cilantro
7. Scotch & Curry (believe it or not, this strange combination of flavours works really well together... doesn't mean I'd actually want it as a soft drink!)

Eenie Meme Miny Mo

This weeks Word Beads:
Deer
Shake
Envy
Behoove
Aphorism

My latest attempt, somewhat longer than my last:

"There are some lines from movies that, as a writer, I wish I'd written (and maybe... just maybe... a little envy creeps into the picture). One of my favourite bits of dialogue is actually from My Cousin Vinny (Marisa Tomei was awesome in that movie): "Imagine you're a deer. You're prancing along. You get thirsty. You spot a little brook. You put your little deer lips down to the cool, clear water — BAM. A fuckin' bullet rips off part of your head. Your brains are laying on the ground in little bloody pieces. Now I aks ya, would you give a fuck what kind of pants the son-of-a-bitch who shot you was wearing?"

"But obviously I didn't write that line of dialogue, so it would behoove me to shake that feeling off so I can eventually come up with brilliant lines of my own... eventually. But for now, I should probably just live by the aphorism: Whatever is clearly expressed is well wrote."

P.S. You can hear Marisa deliver the line here in all her brilliance, courtesy of The Movie Sounds Page.

Lucky Number 7

I've decided to participate in Sunday Seven - Episode 65, and in a more timely manner this go 'round.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name the top seven gifts on your Christmas list this year. (They must be tangible gifts that one could buy for you; items like "Peace on Earth," while a beautiful sentiment, are not allowed on this particular question.)

1. 19" flat screen computer monitor
2. Computer upgrades sufficient to run Adobe Creative Suite
3. Movie Magic Scheduling software
4. Re-upholstering my couch
5. Art Deco pendant watch
6. Framed poster of "I and the Village" by Chagall
7. DVD double feature: Donnie Darko (The Directors Cut) & Memento (Widescreen Special Edition)

P.S. When in doubt, there's always the Amazon.com Wish List!

Meme I Go Again

As you are about to realize, I'm currently enamoured with the notion of memes. Today, I'm participating in Word Beads: "Each week 5 words will be listed. Your mission is to string those words together with other words of your choosing to fashion into a sentence, several sentences, a paragraph, several paragraphs, a poem, or even a short story." This reminded me of my Word of the Day post, which I've been meaning to follow up with another... but I haven't, so I'm doing this instead.

The words this week were:
slogan
acronym
stochastic
ancient
circumscription

Here's my attempt:

"The unusual ancient coin displayed the image of a stochastic version of the Pythagoras tree, with the Pythagorean slogan in its circumscription: "all is numbers." Which, if you combine the elements in a certain way, could end up with the unfortunate acronym of P.A.I.N. (Pythagoras: All Is Numbers). Which may explain why so many people feel the way they do about mathematics."

Weirdgrrl's Belated Sunday Seven

I've just discovered this concept of "memes." What is a meme? You might ask. In the context of blogs, it's some kind of list of questions that you saw somewhere else and you decided to answer the questions. While browsing The Daily Meme, I came across this Sunday Seven at Patrick's Weekender that I decided I had to play, even if I am a little late...

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION:
Name seven of your all-time favorite lines from the movies.

You can see how I couldn't resist. So here we go, off the top of my head...

1. "Yeah man, but it’s a dry heat" ~ Hudson, Aliens

2. "I'm voting for Dukakis." ~ Elizabeth, Donnie Darko

3. "It's not easy being a cast-iron bitch. It takes discipline, years of training... A lot of people don't appreciate that." ~ Lindsey, The Abyss

4. "It’s so easy for you to die dramatically! It's a hell of a lot tougher for those of us who have to keep on trying!" ~ Jean, Billy Jack

5. "Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead." ~ Butch, Pulp Fiction

6. "I am only resolved to act in a manner which will constitute my own happiness without reference to you or any person so wholly unconnected with me." ~ Elizabeth, Pride & Prejudice

7. "Get away from her you bitch!" ~ Ripley, Aliens
