After working in Cardiff for 2 ½ years she went to Uganda for a year teaching and practicing midwifery in a government training school and hospital. At the beginning of 1999 she returned to the UK and completed a Masters degree in Health Service Studies. She began teaching midwifery at Hull University in northern England in 2001. She has worked in a wide range of settings including a low risk birth center and high-risk obstetric units.
Valerie worked with the Cowichan Midwifery Group throughout 2005 and then moved to Victoria in 2006. She also teaches part time for the UBC midwifery programme. Valerie and her husband have one daughter, born at home in 2008, and they are happy to have made Victoria their home.
