In order to win the 2004
World Cup of Hockey, Canada will have to be perfect.
Literally.
After finishing the
round robin with a tidy 3-0 record, Canada now
enters the single game elimination playoff phase of
the tournament. Win and you play on, lose and you go
home.
Which means if Canada
is to win the championship, they will have to be the
first team in Canada Cup/World Cup history with an
unblemished record.
That is no easy task
given the parity of the top seven nations on the
international stage. The task is very daunting if
not down right impossible.
Canada did finish the
1991 Canada Cup undefeated at 6-0-2, however they
only faced elimination on one night.
Both Sweden and
Finland will have to capture the 2004 title with
undefeated streaks. Both nations sit at 2-0-1
currently.
Make no mistake, the
odds are probably against Canada being able to pull
off the perfect record. As impressively as they have
played, the perfect record is almost unfathomable.
