During the labor dispute of
the 1994-95 season, Wayne Gretzky and a bunch of friends formed the
"Ninety Nine All Stars Tour." The idea had several
purposes - to give the players a chance to keep in shape during the
owners' lockout; a chance to take a "hockey vacation" and
see other parts of the world, to raise some money for charity and to
promote hockey in general.
The Ninety Nines as they
were known wore uniforms that bore a distinct resemblance to the
1920s Detroit "candy cane" jersey, except the word
"Detroit" on the crest was replaced with the word
"Ninety Nine."
The Ninety Nine All Stars
went 5-3 in 8 games. The results are as follows.
Dec 1, 1994 4-3 loss vs.
Detroit Vipers (IHL)
Dec 3, 1994 7-1 win vs. Jokerit (Finland)
Dec 4, 1994 4-3 OT loss vs. Ilves Tampere (Finland)
Dec 6, 1994 6-3 win vs. Norwegian Spectrum All Stars
