Collectibles of the Canada Cup are
not in abundant supply. You might expect that for the older
tournaments, but there is even very little from the 1996 World Cup
of Hockey.
The Internet, with auction sites like
Ebay in particular, make finding such items much easier. I have
found Ebay to be the best source for collectibles of both the Canada
Cup and World Cup tourneys.
There are other auction sites, most
notably Yahoo and Amazon, plus a host of smaller companies and of
course the big business auction houses, but generally Ebay always
has a great collection of stuff.
There are lots programs and
magazines, as well as the rare book on each tournament. I acquired
almost all of the like materials used for the book through Ebay.
Keep your eye on the above links as they come and go quite often.
Hockey cards are of course probably
the biggest piece of the hockey collecting pie. You can find
originals and reprints, with the Future Trends 1976 reprint and
Upper Deck 1991 and 1996 being the most common. One seller
frequently posts the Future Trends collection as a complete set as
well as selling unopened boxes. Occasionally you can find rare items
such as oddball cards put out by gas companies etc. Also, expect
Ebay's listings to be flooded with singles from the 1972 Summit
Series. And of course, beware of sellers selling autographed cards
or any other products. Autograph fakes are a big problem with online
sports collections.
You can find some pucks, pennants and
pins. Occasionally you can find some clothing articles - a shirt, a
hat, even a nice jacket all with Canada Cup embroidery. Jerseys are
big of course. The old Team Canada Canada Cup jerseys are big -
expect to see a lot of Gretzky and Lemieux remakes - though I've
seen similar products done for Bobby Hull, Guy Lafleur, Mark Messier
and Bobby Orr. Once there was a Paul Coffey replica - you won't see
that same one again though unless you visit my house and see it on
display!
Some other interesting collectibles
you might see on Ebay if you keep your eye on the listings:
The 1976 tournament had this
collection of 6 beautiful posters - one for each of the
participating nations. I've only seen them available online at one
other place - an online poster dealer - and they were selling them
for $50US each! You can probably get them at Ebay for about $30US
for all 6, maybe less!
Coins - Occasionally you can find
some silver coins. They seemed to have been issued as a set in 1991.
And the most unique listing I've seen
on Ebay -
One seller was selling an Inuit
carving which was given to the player of the game at the end of the
game in 1976. He didn't know which player it belong too. It didn't
sell the only time I saw it online, which I guess isn't surprising
with an opening bid of $400US!.
