Intercultural Ministry Plans for the Fall 2009.
1. ESL
Tuesday and Friday from 9:30 - 11:30am
Registration: September 18th.
Cost: $50 plus (Beginners & Intermediate)
Three Levels: Beginner: with Barb
Small and Jony Van Den Bos
Intermediate: with Jennifer Partridge.
Advanced: with Dorothy Wiebe.
2. Tea and Conversation.
Members of the church community
would like to invite ESL members to their homes again for tea and
conversation. We will be setting up 4 sessions in the Fall term
between October 13 - November 20. More information and sign up sheets
will be available in the Fall.
3. Advanced ESL Conversation
For those students currently in Dorothy's class (and others from the
community) whose English is advanced beyond the current ESL classes,
but who would still like the opportunity to practice their English, we
are organizing an opportunity to gather by themselves one day of the
week (date to be announced) to listen to a news broadcast, followed
the next week with facilitated conversation with an English speaking
member of the congregation to talk about current issues.
4. ESL Bible Study
Rev. Val will once again be doing a
4 week Bible Study during the Fall on Wednesdays from 1:30 - 2:30pm.
The dates will be October 14, 21, 28 and November 4. All are welcome.
5. Conversation and Lunch with
TLC (Senior's group)
Janis and the seniors of the Lunch Club will be extending an
invitation to ESL members to join them on a Thursday during the Fall
term for conversation and lunch. More information will be available in
the Fall.
6. On Sunday, September 27th, West Point Grey United Church is hosting a 40 voice African choir to share in the worship service. This should be a lively, fun and worshipful time. All are welcome to join us at 10:30am on that day.
7. Intercultural Festival of
Praise
Our church will be sending out invitations to some of the ethnic
congregations around the Vancouver area, for their choirs to come
together on the evening of Sunday, November 15 for an intercultural
Festival of Praise. This will be an evening with music from many
cultures and an opportunity to meet others from many different
countries (many of whom are new to Canada). All are welcome.
8. The West Point Grey United
Church Community
would like to extend a special invitation and warm welcome to any
of the people from ESL and local areas to join them on Sunday mornings
for worship at 10:30am. As a family of faith, we are exploring ways to
become an intercultural church together. Some of the things we are
already doing include printing the scripture readings for the Sunday
in Korean and Mandarin, often inviting people to read the scripture
during the worship in languages other than English and printing copies
in advance of the sermon each Sunday so people can follow along. All
are welcome to join us.
