The "Mainland Modular Railway Society"
As we do not yet have a permanent place to display the layout, the MMRS will be displaying
at many local train shows. This will give members a chance to display their work and operate the
layout.

Shows we have Displayed at
2nd Annual Model Train Show in Chilliwack
B.C. presented by the Mt. Cheam Lions Club
Chilliwack 1999 was the first ever public appearance of the MMRS layout. As to be expected
with a new display there were teething problems. The Friday night setup was interesting and the
Saturday morning set up had a few problems. Despite that we were up and running within 15
minutes of the show opening. It was a good show for us. We learned a lot and had fun!
The layout was twelve feet wide by twenty eight feet long and used fifteen modules. Member
modules participating (unless otherwise mentioned modules were unsceniced or had
basic scenery):
- The four club corners (one well sceniced).
- Michael Cole and son Matthew: Coles Yard (actually 16 feet) two six foot and one four foot
module, and one four foot mountain module (good scenery).
- Dick Sutcliffe with two four foot modules, one used on each end of the layout.
- Ted Kowalik and son Matthew with two four foot modules.
- Bill and Kathy Dixon with Mainland Junction, three four foot modules.
- Craig Spink brought his four foot module but there was no place to put it.
Here is a view of one side of the display.
Other members present: Darren Brkich, Michael Gutwein, Bruce Adams, Burc Cander, Ken
Catlin, Norm Clarke, Al Mitchell, Paul B. Ohannesian, Bill Raikes, Mike Slade, Neil
Whitehead.
Trains 99
November 13th & 14th, 1999
Cameron Rec. Center, 9523 Cameron St., Burnaby, B.C.
Trains 99 was the second public appearance of the MMRS layout. With many ( fourteen )
new modules, problems were to be expected. We chased several shorts (wiring problems) in the
layout. Despite the problems partial operation was happening by mid Saturday and full operation
was ready for the public show. Trains 99 was a good show for us. Again we learned a lot and had
fun! Holes in the module testing procedure were discovered and corrected.
The layout was sixteen feet wide by fifty-two feet long and used twenty nine modules. Two
additional modules were available and used for part of the show. Not ready for the show were an
additional twenty-four feet of modules. We had modules from thirteen of our twenty three
members. With these modules and those from new members, we are going to have an awesome
layout for Trains 2000.
DCC Notes. The layout was run with two boosters, one for the front mainline and one for the
rear branch line. All spurs were fed off of the branch line. In future displays, the layout will be
sectioned into eight (or 12, or 16, or . . . ) blocks with each booster powering four blocks through
a PM4.
Member modules participating (unless otherwise mentioned modules were unsceniced or had
basic scenery and were four feet long):
- The four club corners (two well sceniced).
- Club duck-under # 1 with XR and XL.
- Club duck-under # 2.
- Michael Cole and son Matthew:
Coles Yard (actually 16 feet) two six foot and one four foot module, three industries,
and one mountain module (good scenery).
- Dick Sutcliffe with two modules, two industries. Scenery progressing nicely.
- Ted Kowalik and son Matthew with two four foot modules. A nice S curve around the edge
of a lake on the front of the module. Scenery progressing nicely.
- Bill and Kathy Dixon with Mainland Junction, three four foot modules. Three industries,
XR
and XL. Scenery started.
- Neil Whitehead with two modules. Good scenery, four industries and a station.. Sadly this
may be Neil's last show with us as an exhibitor. He is also involved with an O scale modular
group and can't do both.
- Craig Spink with one module. Good scenery.
- Bill Raikes with one module. Two industries and XL.
- Peter Sutton with two modules with a gentle S curve in the main. These will have Hon3
trackage to the rear.
- The Walnut Grove Cabal consisting of (from left to right):
- Lew Twambley with two modules. Two or three industries and XR.
- Darren Brkich with two modules with a gentle S curve in the main. Two industries and a
station.
- Norm Clarke with two modules. A industry and a sawmill served by both standard and dual
gauge trackage and XL.
Although the Walnut Grove modules all form one coordinated scene, the module pairs can be
used as standalone sections.
- Bruce Adams with the right-hand module of his module pair. One large industry.
- Al Mitchell with the right-hand module of his three module scene featuring a spur under the
mainlines.
Note: XL and XR refer to left-hand crossover and right-hand crossover.
