NEW PROGRAM

 The West Side Toy Lending Library

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 -5pm at the Jericho MFRC

Thanks to a grant from the United Way of the Lower Mainland Success By Six, we have opened a toy lending library for families living on the west side of Vancouver. Toys, puzzles, music kits, books and much more are now available for parents, family members, caregivers and nannies to borrow. Please note that program registration for the fall programs will begin on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 9:30 am and is on first come first served basis. You can sign up in person or phone 604-738-2819 to register. Subsidies are available for all workshops. All classes must be paid for within one week of registration. Payment is by cash or cheque.

Day Programs

Nobody's Perfect
This program is suitable for parents with children 18 months or older. Children
must be able to separate from their
parents during the program.

8 Tuesdays
October 6 to November 24,
1:30-3:30 pm

Nobody’s Perfect is a nationally recognized program for parents of children 0-5 years. The program gives parents a supportive place to meet others with children of the same age and with whom they share interests and concerns. The group is designed to be fun and to provide creative solutions to common parenting dilemmas. Five very informative parenting booklets will be studied and will be yours to keep as a quick reference when needed.

Parent/Child Circle of Sharing
9 Thursdays
October 1 to November 26,
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
NB Held at Jericho Military Base

For parents with their children

  • To share what they do well
  • To learn to do some things differently
  • To be a resource for each other

Circle of Sharing is a small group of parents who meet together with their children in a relaxed and nurturing environment. Parents have the opportunity to play with and observe their children in the playroom, as well as join in parent discussions about areas of concern to all the parents involved. Through staff facilitated discussion, mutual support, assistance, encouragement and acceptance, parents can experience transformative growth with a goal to hopeful parenting with new confidence and skills.

Parent-Child Mother Goose Program for Infant Group 0-12 months
8 Mondays
September 28 to November 23,
1:00 - 2:30 pm
(No group on October 12th)

A group experience for parents with their babies up to one year old, focusing on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs and stories. The pace is slow and relaxed with plenty of time for repetition of material and casual discussion of issues and questions that arise. This is a nationally recognized Early Literacy Program. Please bring a blanket for your baby to lie on!

Parent-Child Mother Goose
Program for Toddler Group
13 to 24 months

8 Mondays
September 28 to November 23,
3:00 - 4:00 pm
(No group on October 12th)

A group experience for parents with their toddlers, focusing on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs and stories. The pace for this group is much faster than the infant group, with a new emphasis on large motor movement songs with plenty of actions. This is a nationally recognized Early Literacy Program.

STEP
Systematic Training for Effective Parenting
8 Thursdays,
October 1 to November 19, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
NO CHILDMINDING

Come and Join the STEP program to learn, discuss, and use practical parenting techniques. Just a few of the topics found in this program include: communication, goals of behaviour, encouragement, discipline.

We welcome Angela and Maren as new facilitators of the STEP program. They are both graduate students at the Adler School of Professional Psychology and have past experience and training in group facilitation.

You're Not The Boss of Me: Understanding Resistance in Children
Thursday, October 8, 1:00pm to 2:30pm

Based on Dr. Gordon Neufeld's paradigm, we will discuss the meaning of deep-rooted instinct to resist and oppose when feeling pressed upon or controlled, as well as the dynamics that control its existence and expression. There will also be an introduction on strategies on how to handle this misunderstood and troublesome reaction. Topics include: what is counter will and why kids resist, counter will and how it is mistaken as a sign of strong will, working with stuck children in relation to counter will, attachment and counter will instinct, understanding counter will of young children, and strategies for handling counter will.

Positive Discipline   for parents with children 18 months to 3 years              
2 Thursdays, October 22 &29, 1:30pm to 3:30pm

What do you do when your child responds with an emphatic "NO!" to your polite request? How to avoid a face-off with your toddler is a common challenge for many parents. This two session workshop will address such concerns and consider some practical strategies for managing misbehaviour and promoting good behaviour, including information on handling temper tantrums and setting realistic boundaries for your toddler.

Tantrums, Tears and Turmoil: Understanding Frustration and
Aggression in Children

Thursday, November 19, 1:00pm to 2:30pm

How does your child manages his/her frustrations when things don't work out for them and when they don't get what they want? Stepping in to help your child take up a relationship with his/her frustration will be one of your best investments as a parent. Frustrations can become overwhelming. It is important to understand how this can lead to aggressive behaviour. Topics include: the biggest source of frustration for a child, the importance of tears in the adaptive process, aggression proofing your relationship, how frustration leads to aggression, helping your child through frustration.

The Trouble With Time-Outs
Thursday, November 26, 1:00pm to 2:30pm

Time-outs - the kind that involves separation form parents - has become a popular practice for dealing with problem behaviour. The issue is not that it works when it does, but why it works and what it costs in the long term. Once assume to be safe practice and still recommended as the discipline of choice by over 80% of today's pediatricians, we must now become conscious of the risks of such discipline. WE will discuss the trouble with time-outs and strategies for discipline in ways that are attachment-safe and developmentally friendly.

Promoting Positive Sibling Relationships
Tuesday, October 27, 9:30am to 11:30am

The sibling relationship can be one of the most loving and rewarding relationships we have. It can also be one of the most challenging and frustrating. Topics include how you can: help your children develop a very warm and special connection, decrease conflict and encourage positive interactions between siblings, and prepare your child for the new baby.

Toilet Training

Your child is almost 3 years old and you’re despairing about having him/her ever toilet trained. This session will explore the
“when” and the “how” of this developmental skill. There will be lots of time for discussion as parents share their questions and
