Playroom & Special Event Assistant

Job Overview

The playroom and special event assistant will assist a staff team who are responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating a parent/caregiver and child ‘play and learn’ drop-in program, for children from birth to five, in a busy multicultural family resource program. This staff will be instrumental in planning two multicultural summer events for families in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Assist staff to plan and implement a full range of developmental and age appropriate playroom activities
  • Assist in maintaining Family Place’s emotionally safe, respectful and inclusive environment
  • Work flexibly with children and parents/caregivers as part of Family Place’s team
  • Assist in maintaining the playroom, ensuring that equipment, toys, books and program supplies are well maintained
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate health and safety standards
  • Participate fully in all Family Place functions as required
  • Assist in planning and delivering two multi-cultural summer celebrations for member families
Qualifications

  • Must have been a full time student during 2007 -2008, be returning to school full time in September and be aged between 15& 30
  • Previous experience working with children, birth to five years an asset
  • Good organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work comfortably in a cross-cultural, multi-lingual setting
  • Second language an asset

Terms of Employment

  • 32 hours per week, 14 week term
  • Monday to Friday, some flexibility required
  • $9 per hour
  • May 26, 2008 start date

Playroom Volunteer

We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic volunteers to assist playroom staff with set-up, daily routine and clean-up at our busy "Play and Learn" Parent / Caregiver and Child Drop-In. Volunteer hours are available during our Drop-In, from 9:15 am until 12:15 pm, Monday to Thursday, with a choice of 1 to 4 mornings per week. The duration of contracts for volunteers varies from 3 to 6 months.


Applicants should have good interpersonal and oral communication skills and enjoy working with young children. Experience working with young children is preferred, but not essential. Our members come from far and wide and a second language is definitely an asset. Ongoing training is provided by playroom staff; this is a chance to gain experience working with young children and their families for those interested in a related career.
