YVR : THE REMEMBERED CITY
Roundhouse Performance Centre, Vancouver, December 2011
YVR The Remembered City from Michael Sider on Vimeo.
Vancouver has been a city under intense pressure to adapt to the demands of the global economy: urban expansion, development, re-designating living space, industrial space and agricltural space to create for profit housing on a scale unprecedented, and creating an unprecedented scarcity of affordable, humane housing adapted to the needs of the existing population. YVR:the rememerbed city was a project that investigated the 'remainder', by inviting Vancouverites to re-create what has disappeared from memory and cardboard. The result was a floating city of paper buildings exhibited at the Roundhsoue Performance Centre and accompanied by a sound installation that draws on the World Soundscape project from 1973.

created with Kenneth Newby
Concurrent with my visual art studies, I began to collaborate with independent theatre and dance theatre companies in Vancouver, and across Canada, in roles ranging from set and sound designer to writer, dramaturg and sometimes director. I am especially interested in devised theatre, collaborative creation, and in site-related scenography.
I have long been associated with Radix Theatre in Vancouver, the early years of Rumble Productions, and I worked for many years as a close collaborator with Vancouver choreographer Lola McLaughlin. My work has been nominated for the Siminovich Prize in Theatre as well as twenty individual and collective Jessie Richardson Awards and Nominations.
Andreas Kahre is an interdisciplinary artist and designer whose work combines images, sound and text in a variety of configurations. Born in Germany in 1959, he has lived in Canada since 1979, where he studied visual art, art history and film at the University of British Columbia.
Based in Vancouver and on Gabriola Island, he has been working as a freelance artist, musician, writer and designer since the 1990s. His work encompasses interdisciplinary performances, audio art installations, and collaborations with theatre, dance and new media artists.
Andreas was one of the director/curators of the Western Front artist run centre in Vancouver for more than ten years. He has taught as adjunct and sessional faculty at the department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. He is currently the founding artistic director of the Xenographic Society and the Gabriola Institute of Contemporary Art artist-run centre.
I have been creating design and visual identities for cultural organizations since the 1980s, and have over twenty years' experience as art director and publications designer, including ten years as Art Director of FRONT Magazine. I am familiar with all aspects of print and web design, and my work has received Western magazine Awards, including Best Art Direction (Cover) in 2000.
To see a digital portfolio of my work, please send an email, to receive notice of the upcoming online portfolio email me.
I create sound-based installations and performances, and have collaborated on more than a hundred interdisciplinary projects that have been presented across Canada and internationally. I am particularly interested in interactive works that combine text, sound and paper theatre, in acoustic ecology, and in fluxus–inspired, community-engaged art practices.
My projects often explore the interstices between corporate and institutional constructs in contemporary art practice, in the form of diagrams, promotional material, exercises in 'branding' and 'strategic planning', and in the creation of virtual organizations.
I have been a drummer and percussionist for more than forty years and have performed — more recently also on electric cello — with jazz, new music, and world music ensembles across Canada. I am especially interested in improvisation, non-Western musical traditions, and acousmatic composition.
I began musical training with the Stuttgarter Hymnus Chorknaben under Prof. Gerhard Wilhelm at the age of nine, studied percussion and flute with private teachers, including German Jazz drummer Hannes Clauss, and in workshops and intensives with Glen Velez, Steve Lacy, Pauline Oliveros, Trishy Shankaran, and Karl Berger, among others. As a sound designer I have worked with many theatre, dance companies as well as on film and installations and several projects with Electronic Arts.
I began working as a freelance translator and writer in the late 1980s, creating and adapting texts, in both English and German, for theatre and film projects. Since then, writing has become a central aspect of my practice as an interdisciplinary artist,
From 1998 until 2009, I was co-director of the Western Front Artist-run Center's Publications Program, and editor-in-chief of FRONT Magazine. I have been commissioned to write libretti and dramatic texts, and have served as writer and editor for various publications on contemporary interdisciplinary art practice. I am fully bilingual and translate into both English and German, concentrating on critical writing and contemporary Canadian novels, frequently in collaboration with German translator Michael Mundhenk.

I apprenticed with Canadian naval architect Richard Johnson from 1980 to 1984, and continued until 1986 as associate designer at Viking Pacific Inc. I worked on craft ranging from high speed aluminium monohulls to SWATH vehicles, and a two year research project for a high speed inshore lifeboat with the Canadian Coast Guard and naval architect Howard Apollonio.
From 1986 until 1988 I was marine designer for German+Milne Naval Architects, and the ECS Group of Companies, in Ottawa, for the SAGA-N research submarine and the Polar 8 Icebreaker.
In 1987 I co-founded Sedna Subsea Systems based in Montreal where, as Head of Design I developed the Agloolik One Habitat, an underwater hotel for one hundred occupants, to be constructed on the coast of Venezuela. Since returning to Vancouver, I have continued to work as a freelance marine designer on commercial and pleasure craft, and founded Navigraph Marine Design in 1990.
