THE MUSEUM OF INNOCENCE (Infinite Subtext)

Roundhouse Exhibition Space, Vancouver, May 2014

Combining aspects of interactive audio installation, museum exhibit, craft corner, black market, and paper theatre performance, THE MUSEUM OF INNOCENCE is a ‘storytelling machine’ created by its audience, both in the installation space, and by adding content remotely. Named after Orhan Pamuk's novel, the installation will be animated by layers of sound that are explored by touch, using tactile transducers

YVR : THE REMEMBERED CITY

Roundhouse Performance Centre, Vancouver, December 2011

Vancouver has been a city under intense pressure to adapt to the demands of the global economy: urban expansion, development, re-designating living space, industrial space and agricltural space to create for profit housing on a scale unprecedented, and creating an unprecedented scarcity of affordable, humane housing adapted to the needs of the existing population. YVR:the rememerbed city was a project that investigated the 'remainder', by inviting Vancouverites to re-create what has disappeared from memory and cardboard. The result was a floating city of paper buildings exhibited at the Roundhsoue Performance Centre and accompanied by a sound installation that draws on the World Soundscape project from 1973.

I have worked with many of Vancouver's independent professional theatre and dance companies as set and sound designer, writer, dramaturg and sometimes director. I am especially interested in devised theatre, sited projects, and work that combines performance, media and text. I have a long associated with Radix Theatre, and in recent years collaborated with companies such as Rimini Protokoll, Forced Entertainment and Wild Excursions. I collaborated on numerous projects with Pink Ink, The Electric Company Touchstone, Neworld, Ruby Slippers, Felix Culpa, Western Theatre Conspiracy, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, the Only Animal and nearly all of Rumble's productions until 2005.

I also work frequently with dance theatre and collaborated for many years closely with Vancouver choregrapher Lola McLaughlin, as well as companies including Mascall Dance, Karen Jamieson, Cheryl Prophet, DanceCorps, EDAM, Karen Greenhough and others. My work has been nominated for the Siminovich Prize in Theatre as well as twenty individual and collective Jessie Richardson Awards.

Andreas Kahre is an interdisciplinary artist who works      with images, sound and text in many different configu-rations. Born in Germany in 1959, he has lived in Canada since 1979, where he studied visual art, art history and film at the University of British Columbia.

Based in Vancouver and on Gabriola Island, he has been working as a freelance artist, designer, musician and writer since the 1990s. His work encompasses interdisciplinary and sited performances, sound installations, projects with theatre, media, dance and music ensembles, radio art, text work, and contemporary paper theatre.

Andreas was one of the director/curators of the Western Front artist run centre in Vancouver for more than ten years, and has taught as adjunct and sessional faculty at the department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia. He is currently artistic director of the Xenographic Society, and founding director of the Gabriola Institute of Contemporary Art.

I work as a freelance writer, editor, dramaturg and translator, creating and adapting texts, in both English and German including visual poetry, text for performance and libretti.

From 1998 until 2009, I was editor-in-chief of FRONT Magazine and co-director/editor of the Western Front Publications Program. I have also served as guest editor for Canadian Theatre Review, Editions Le Sabord, and Transmissions, among others, and have published and edited a number of texts about contemporary interdisciplinary performance practice. Currently, I am editor of Dance Central, published by the Vancouver Dance Centre..

I am fully bilingual and have been translating into both English and German since the 1980s, frequently in collaboration with Michael Mundhenk, including Germans translations of several contemporary Canadian novels, critical writing, essays, as well as technical translations and software localization.

Andreas Kahre

I create interdisciplinary performances, installations and media–based work, and have collaborated on more than a hundred interdisciplinary projects that have been presented across Canada and internationally. I am particularly interested in devised theatre, site–related scenography and community-engaged performance, and in work that combines text, audio and media with elements of contemporary paper theatre.

Commissions and presentations across Canda have included the Vancouver Art Gallery FUSE series, the Western Front, Artspeak, The Belkin Gallery at UBC, the Helen Pitt Gallery, HIVE Festival, the LIVE Biennal, Open Space Victoria, YYZ, The Music Gallery, The Deep Wireless and Freefall Festival, Toronto, The Newfoundland Sound Symposium, ELEKTRA Festival Montreal, Magnetic North, the Festival des Ameriques, The High Performance Rodeo, PuSh, and the National Arts Centre, Ottawa.

International Presentations have included the ISEA Media Arts Festival, The International Gamelan Festival in Yogyakarta, The Paper Theatre Festival Preetz, L Gallery Moscowl, Teatro El Galeón, Mexico City, LIFT Festival London UK, Theatro Reatu in Arles and HAU 2 Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin.

Sound Design and Audio Art  >>

I began working with sound-based art in the 1980s, and developed a practice that ranges from sound design for theatre, dance and video to radiophonic work and media art istallations.

I became part of the acoustic ecology movement centered at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, and the Wireless Graffiti performance series by Vancouver Coop Radio and Rumble Productions. I frequently collaborate with Toronto-based composer Darren Copeland in creating audio installations and radiophonic work, as well as independent audio projects with media, dance and performance ensembles

Radio art includes works for CBC Radio and commissions by Deutschlandradio Kultur, ORF Kunstrradio and the Western Front As a sound designer I have worked with many Vancouver theatre, dance companies, worked on feature film and video projects, and numerous projects as sound designer for theatre, dance, new media installations, and audio art projects, including and several projects with Electronic Arts.

Music and Recordings   >>

As an improviser, drummer and percussionist—and more recently, working with the electric cello—I have performed with jazz, new music, and world music ensembles across Canada. I am especially interested in non-Western percussion, frame drums and clay percussion, as well as electroacoustic sound. I have been active in the Vancouver improvising scene since the early 1980s with the New Orchestra Workshop, performed and toured with ensembles that include Hextremities and Cymbali, and in duets with instrumentalists like François Houle (Letting the Blue Note Settle), Alan Kushan and Amir Koushkani. I have been a part of the Vancouver Gamelan community since the first summer intensives with WRT Wasitudiningrat at SFU in 1986, and have composed, performed and created librettos for contemporary Wayang Kulit shadowplay and works such as Ear, Nost Throat, commissioned by the Vancouver Community Gamelan.

I began musical training with the Stuttgarter Hymnus Chorknaben under Prof. Gerhard Wilhelm, studied percussion with instrumental teachers, notably German Jazz Drummer Hannes Clauss, and in numerous workshops with teachers that include Glen Velez, Steve Lacy, Pauline Oliveros, Trishy Shankaran, Karl Berger,I Nyoman Wenten and Sutrisno Hartana. Currently, I am artistic director, together with Dave McGrath, of the annual Gabriola Drum Day Percussion Festival.

While studying visual art, printmaking and film, I also apprenticed with Canadian naval architect Richard Johnson and later became associate designer at Viking Pacific Inc., where I worked on projects ranging from fast inshore Search and Rescue craft to amphibian vehicles. From 1986 until 1988 I worked as marine designer for German+Milne, one of Canada's oldest naval architecture firms, part of the the ECS Group of Companies, and until the 1990s I was chief designer at Sedna Subsea Engineering where I designed the Agloolik One 100 person underwater habitat.

As a graphic designer, I have worked on numerous theatre and music projects, and in publication design, including ten years as Art director and designer for FRONT Magazine where our work was recognized with three Western Magazine Awards, including Best Art Direction (Cover) in 2000. I design print and web material for non-profit organizations, including print design, posters, programs, CD projects and publications design.

Blackdog Publishing of London, England will be featuring a chapter on the 2002 production of The Swedish Play in an upcoming publication. Behind the Scenes: Contemporary Set Design is due to be released next year and according to editor Phoebe Adler will "investigate the burgeoning of site-specific approaches to performance over the past 30 years in the UK and Canada and the shifts in focus within the genre." Conceived by Radix Associate Andreas Kahre, The Swedish Play was presented at Ikea in Richmond, BC where we installed a low-powered radio signal allowing audience members to listen to the show's soundtrack on portable FM radios as they moved through the store.
