| What should I expect in our first session? Many clients are nervous coming to see a new therapist, particularly if they haven’t experienced therapy before. This is natural. In your first session you will have the opportunity to discuss the concerns that prompted you to seek assistance and to find out what our work together might look like. I will ask you questions because it is essential that I fully understand your concerns. At the end of the session I will tell you how I think we may best work with your concerns and approximately how long it will take for you to see results. How frequently should I schedule appointments? Each person is different and has different needs. Most of my clients come weekly for the first four sessions. After that many move to bi-weekly. Many couples come bi-weekly due to busy schedules, others feel the need for more support and come every week if they are in a difficult time. How long does it take? This is a difficult question to answer. When individuals come with concerns where clarity is needed, this can often be resolved in a few sessions. Issues such as stress or anxiety may be resolved by addressing current lifestyle or they may be related to life-long beliefs and attitudes. A good rule of thumb is that if the issue has been life-long, it will probably take longer to work through in therapy. Issues such as childhood sexual trauma naturally take more time. By the end of your first or second session you will have a clear idea of how long it should take to see results. Are there things I can do between sessions? Yes! I tend to offer people homework, even if it is in the form of suggesting that you notice particular things or think about particular things before the next session. I also suggest further reading or additional resources when appropriate. How much does it cost? My fee is $100 per 50 minute session. Those seeking hormone assessment may qualify for subsidy. Please ask. Are your fees covered by my insurance or Employee Assistance Plan? My fees are covered by many insurance plans. Insurance companies offer a variety of packages, with varying coverage. It is best to check with your plan. In general, clients pay for their sessions and send in their receipts for re-imbursement. I can also see Department of National Defence employees on their plan. Employee Assistance Plans often require you to choose from their list of therapists. If I’m not on their list I still have been able to see some clients because of my specialized area of expertise. Again, it is best to check with your plan. How long is each appointment? Sessions are usually 50 minutes. Some couples find they benefit from booking 80 minute sessions while others find 50 minutes works well for them. I am happy to book a time that works for you. How far in advance do I need to book? I can generally see people within two weeks for an initial appointment. It is always easier to get a time earlier in the day than later. What is sex therapy? Sex therapy “looks like” any other talk therapy. The difference is that we are discussing your sexual concerns. Over the years exercises have been developed that are helpful to particular sexual problems such as early ejaculation. In sex therapy, homework in the form of exercises is often given. Some sexual concerns can be addressed individually, others are best addressed in couple’s therapy.
