In addition, it is quite likely that Lizzy and the Gardiners had to wait for the carriage to be brought around...
Here is an amusing explanation posted by Caroline (It's the booze wot does it: Friday, October 9, 1998, at 8:25 p.m) on the Pride and Prejudice Board. Thanks Caroline!
When the Gardiners and Lizzie arrive at Pemberley, expecting to be given the tour, how long do they think it will take? Two hours, maybe? What do they do with the horses and driver for two hours? They cannot just leave them standing around in the hot sun, can they? So they put the horses in the stable or in the shade, put the coachman into the care of the kitchen staff, and say "See you in two hours!" Then, when Lizzie cuts the visit short, they have to pull the poor guy away from his pint of porter and polite conversation with the kitchen-maid, persuade him to harness up again, and get ready to go. Can't do that in ten seconds, you know.
