Communion

Edson United Church celebrates an open communion table.  Anyone who believes in Jesus is welcome to participate in receiving communion at The Lord’s Table.

What is Communion?

Through his ministry Jesus ate at table with friends, outcasts, and sinners.  In his teachings he used the table as an image of hospitality and God’s reign.  As his last supper with his followers he initiated the mystery of The Last Supper, a sacrament—a visible sign of God’s grace.  This ritual meal is a Christian development of Jewish Passover traditions and mealtime worship.  Empowered by their experience of the risen Christ, the early church met weekly for the proclamation of the Word and the breaking of bread.

In the church of the third millennium we continue to enact the history and hopes of a people and God’s care and concern for the world.  We break bread and pass the cup at table to remember our identity as a people of God.

And we believe that this sacrament saves us: it saves us from an outlook in the world that despairs, rather than hopes.  It saves us from the presumption that we are more than what we truly are as human beings, acknowledging that God is always greater.  It saves us from a humanity that would see us resorting to violence, greed, and abuse of power.  Gathering around the communion table symbolizes a holy human community based in the grace and love and mercy of God.  It’s an identity into which we grow and move and exist.
