Weddings

We welcome people who are interested in being married through the church.

Every couple seeking to be married at Edson United Church must be lawfully able to be married under the laws of the Province of Alberta.

In instances where a couple chooses not to enter into Christian marriage at the present time, such common-law or cohabitating couples are welcome to meet with the ordained minister to discuss a ceremony to celebrate and bless their relationship.

Couples seeking marriage will book their wedding date twelve months in advance through the church office.

What is Christian marriage?

Marriage for Christians is more than a social sanction; it is a covenant made before God.  The crucial question for the church is not what marriage is or has been in society, but what it ought to be.

Our relationship with God and with each other finds it basis in the idea of a covenant.  A covenant is that unique and mutually agreed upon relationship with God, experienced by all who are claimed and possessed by God’s promises.

While not a sacrament, we believe marriage to be profoundly sacramental.  Marriage is a means of God’s grace not only for the marital partners but also for their children and for the wider community.

It begins with God.  We know God as faithful, loving, compassionate and just.  We are called to embody this in our own relationships with each other.  Relationships cannot thrive and grow in isolation.  They need the encouragement, nurture, support and accountability of community.  Thus, covenants of Marriage and Life Partnership are public.  We celebrate such covenants in a worship service traditionally called “a wedding.”

Requirements for being married in the church:

-Every couple seeking to be married or have their relationship celebrated at Edson United Church must complete a marriage preparation course

-Couples residing outside of Edson and who cannot meet for marriage preparation shall engage in an approved marriage preparation course at their location

-Under no circumstances does marriage preparation guarantee that the wedding will be celebrated through Edson United Church if the order of ministry person believes that the values of Christian marriage outlined by the church has no reasonable possibility of existing in the current relationship

-In the event the wedding ceremony will not be performed, Edson United Church shall reimburse the couple all fees pertaining to bookings.

-The couple can appeal the order of ministry person’s decision to the Church council in writing.

As a sign of our commitment to fostering healthy marriages, we commit ourselves to inviting the couples back every year for the first three years of the marriage for marriage enrichment.
