TRANS CANADA TRAIL RELAY STOPS BY NORTH GLENORA

North Glenora was actively involved with the Trans Canada Trail Relay 2000. The water from the Arctic Ocean passed through Edmonton on April 31 and May 1 on its way to Ottawa. Beginning at the Legislature, the water was carried along River Road, Groat Road and 135 Street where the carriers entered our Millennium Park. Members of the scouts, cubs and beavers proudly escorted the water down the trail and after a short official ceremony, sent it on its way with the next group of carriers. Thank to all participants and spectators who turned out to make this 'once in a lifetime event' a great success.

North Glenora boy, FRAN GOW, coaches team to Royal Bank National Junior Championship 2000

Fran started his hockey career at the age of 10 as a goalie in North Glenora, coached by Art Conacher. He played Mites, PeeWee, Bantam and one year at the Bantam AA level. He came back to play Midget B in North Glenora, coached by Doug Bowler and Paul Shimler. This team topped all the Edmonton zones at Minor Hockey Week and won the Provincials. Doug Bowler can share their record for the season.

Fran moved to Fort McMurray in 1984 where he played Senior A hockey before coaching Bantam AA and Midget AAA. He became Assistant Coach for 2 years and then Head Coach and General Manager for a total of 7 years with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons Junior A team. He has guided his teams to semi-finals and finals for 4 years. They won the Alberta Championship in 1997.

In May, Fran led his team to victory over Chillawack and winning the Doyle Cup. The Oil Barons went on to win the AJHL Royal Bank Cup 2000 in a thrilling 2-1 final by defeating the Rayside-Balfour Saber-Cats.

Fran and his lovely wife, Sheri, have 3 sons: Ryan (10), Lucas (8) and Brennan (2). I wonder what they play?!? Fran has not forgotten where he started his hockey and the fun he had playing the sport he loves. He attended school at Coronation, Westminster, Ross Shep and later, NAIT.

In Memory

Marcel Lambert, who served as North Glenora's first Community League President, passed away on September 24, 2000 in Barrhead at the age of 81.

Edmonton-born Lambert was captured by the Germans during W.W. II while serving with the King's Own Calgary Regiment of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. He spent three years as a prisoner of war. He became a Rhodes scholar and lawyer after the war.

Mr. Lambert left North Glenora shortly after he was elected to the House of Commons in 1957. He served Edmonton through 10 terms as a Conservative MP. He was briefly speaker of the Commons and rose to become Veterans Affairs minister in 1963.

At this time of year, a fitting tribute to a local hero might be a visit to The Veterans Affairs Website. ).

Why not visit this site with your child to share the past and what was sacrificed for our freedom. This is a very tasteful and well-produced site.

COMMUNITY MEMBERS HONORED

On January 24, 2001, the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) recognized two long-time residents of North Glenora, during the EFCL 80th Anniversary Celebration. Arlene Meldrum and Don Eastcott were presented with Honorary Lifetime Memberships in the Federation by President, Ron Kuban, and were congratulated by dignitaries representing the Federal, Provincial and civic governments. The EFCL represents 142 Community Leagues in Edmonton, one in each neighbourhood and is unique in the world. It is North America's largest volunteer recreation association.

Arlene and Don have been residents and community volunteers since the 1960's. They have been active in numerous organizations, groups and the Community League for over 40 years. Both are Past Presidents of the EFCL as well as serving on the Federation Revitalization Task Force.

Arlene has chaired committees in North Glenora for some years and wrote an environmental advisory article for the Newsletter. She was involved in the Master Composting Program and was the founder and designer of the "Garbage Fair", an idea which started in North Glenora and is spreading across our city, across Canada and even into the United States.

Don has twice served two-year terms as President of NGCL, has chaired League committees and presently is a member of the Planning Committee and co-ordinator of the North Glenora Time Capsule project.

NORTH GLENORA PARKS MILLENNIUM FUND FALL UPDATE

by Bill MacDonald

Good news! North Glenora residents, family members and friends have contributed over $4,000 to our Park Millennium Fund. Major contributions have been received for benches dedicated to a family member who resided in the community over the years. The Community League appreciates the generosity of all who have contributed. In future newsletters we will tell you a little bit about the people who the dedications are in memory of.

We are still accepting donations for the redevelopment of the Park. If you have been there recently you will see a lot is being done. Everybody in North Glenora will benefit from these changes. Our objective is to raise $28,000 in material and cash donations for benches, picnic tables, signs, trees for the park, and materials for the Multi-use Facility.

You should have received a brochure with the last newsletter in early September (it was green) explaining about the Fund and the amenities for which donations are being requested. If you need another copy of the brochure, or want more information before you make your donation, please call Bill MacDonald at 451-1442.

The Parks Millennium Fund is important to all of us.

NORTH GLENORA PARKS MILLENNIUM FUND

We need your donation to help complete the work being done to greatly improve and beautify our park. Everybody in North Glenora will benefit from the changes to the park.

The Parks Millennium Fund has been created to receive donations from residents, community groups and area businesses, helping to enhance the North Glenora Park.

You've already seen the changes that happened last year, so be prepared for more this year. We will be doing more facilities development and begin the landscaping. And that's where you can help.

Our objective is to raise $28,000 in material and cash donations for benches, picnic tables, signs, trees for the park, and materials for the Multi-Use Facility. Already FOUR benches have been donated.

Donations can be raised in various ways. Community groups can raise funds to "plant a tree", "honour a team" or "honour past volunteers of the year". Individuals can make a donation in memory of someone, or as a birthday or anniversary gift to a family member or friend. Donations do not have to be dedicated for a particular amenity or purpose. Any amount will be helpful. Can you think of other innovative ways to raise donations?

Any contributor who makes a cash donation will be issued a tax receipt. The donations are increased in value, as they generate matching grants from granting agencies. Even time contributed in helping to install amenities or do other tasks can be considered as a donation.

Contributors will be recognized in appropriate ways. Anyone wanting to make a donation should call Bill MacDonald at 451 1442.

Please call Bill if you plan to organize your group to raise funds. The Parks Millennium Fund is important to all of us. Without donations we will have fewer attractions in the Park.
