Divined Sum
Someone writes down 3 five digit numbers, then you write down 2 more
five digit numbers. What is the probability you could add these 5 five
digit numbers by only a quick glance at the numbers or by just seeing one
number? The probability is 100%.
You may have seen this before or actually done it.
Many people have seen it so "getting away with it"
is hard because people can figure out youe pattern.
Here are two methods: the Traditional and the More Dramatic.
The Traditional Method
- 84319
- 67310
- 40019
- 15780
- 32689
- 240017
- The first 3 five digit numbers are written by others.
- You write the fourth number under them, so that for the first
and fourth numbers, each pair of vertical digits add to 9.
- Do the same for the fifth number using the digits in
number three.
- To get your divined sum, take the row three number,
subtract 2 from it the ones digit
(9-2=7) and put 2 in front of it to
give the answer.
The More Dramatic Method
- 84319
- 67310
- 40019
- 35878
- 56791
- 240017
- The first three five digit numbers are chosen by others
(same as before).
- Write on a slip of paper the first number minus 2 with
a 2 placed at the front (28417). Give it to someone to hold.
- Now do row 4 & 5. Subtract the sum of the vertical ones digits
in roow 2 & 3 from 18. The answer is 9, split this
any way you want. In this case 8 & 1 and place those
two numbers in the ones column in row 4 & 5.
- Now subtract the sum of the vertical tens digits
in roow 2 & 3 from 18. The answer is 16, split this
any way you want. In this case 9 & 7 and place those
two numbers in the tens column in row 4 & 5.
Continue from right to left.
- Have someone add the 5 five digit numbers together and compare to
divined sum.
- People can look at your chosen numbers for the Traditional Method
but it's not there, so they believe you are
either a "caculairvoyant" or a mathmatical wizard.
