Aloha!
Welcome
to the Tamihi Five-0
|
The Tamihi Five-0 is a fun
slalom race
for open canoes. "Five-0" stands for fifty, as in the
50-second penalty you get for missing a gate (and
missing gates is part of recreational racing!).
The Five-0 is
a get-together
for whitewater canoeists around Vancouver and beyond to have some fun doing
something different. The gates are a
great way
to test your skills!
Whitewater canoeists - advanced paddlers and those
who dabble on the odd weekend - can try their luck on this
class II+ race course. Whitewater
skills
and equipment are required, a sense of humour is recommended.
Bring your family and friends. Don't be shy!
Paddle tandem and solo and compete for King
or Queen of the River!

Thank
you racers and volunteers for getting lots of boats down the course quickly this year!
Lots of close races - and tension still in the air as results are re-calculated!
Thanks to those who
travelled from Portland, Seattle, Bellingham, Kamloops, Kelowna, Toronto and the UK!
Sept. 17-18th, 2011 will be our 4th race! This is not an event where you'll find lots of trained racers
- you'll find mortal
river-runners just
having a good time trying to get through the gates.
Experienced paddlers can try for a fast, clean
run; newer paddlers may "decide" to skip a gate or two, and that's OK!
The Five-0
is organized by volunteers, many
from the Beaver Canoe Club, with the
generous help of the real slalom racers from the Chilliwack
Centre of Excellence (CCE).
Many open boaters don't normally run Tamihi, but water
levels in
mid-September make the course - which avoids the top
half of the rapid - runnable for intermediate whitewater
canoeists. Just in case, the water is at its "warmest", and
bring a
throwrope!! The challenge is making the gates, not
surviving the rapid,
but
proper equipment is required and you need to be confident in
class II rapids.

Clinics
For
the first few years we
arranged pre-race clinics in August. Those have been
phased
out for now, in favour of casual practice organized on Paddle Net.
Another clinic could be held at any time, if there
is a
volunteer to make it happen.
In
the meantime, you
can check out
these tips and links.
