Pre-race Clinics - Make One Happen!

In advance of the first two races (2008 and 2009), we offered a 1-day clinic to give us recreational canoeists a chance to get familiar with gates.  The clinic has been phased out for now, but could be held again anytime there is a volunteer to coordinate one.

Instructors:  Previously Andrew Mylly and Ryan Mader

Goal and content:  The goal of the course would be to introduce canoesists (solo or tandem) to the basics of slalom paddling and build some familiarity with running gates.  The clinic could include:

  • Efficient forward strokes
  • Maintaining the boats momentum
  • Turning strokes and strategies for upstream and downstream gates
  • Recognizing gate set-ups and choosing lines
  • General awareness of what to expect on race weekend
  • Drill ideas for continued practice

Location:  The gates on the lower Seymour River in North Vancouver.

Schedule:  Approximately 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Equipment:  Canoes and river gear are not provided.  As per the race, boats must be well-outfitted whitewater canoes.  Please arrange for your own equipment.

Contact:  Need a volunteer.

Registration:  The cost of the clinic would be approximately $25/person.

For additional comments and resources on how to adjust (and even practice) your paddling style for slalom gates, see the how to page, including a link to a Brian Otter's video on the Gull River OC Slalom.
